La sobrina de dos años de Beaux y el modelo favorito, Ernesta Drinker (1892-1981), agarra la mano de su enfermera, Mattie, cuya figura está audazmente atraída en la cintura. La composición radical y la libre pincelada reflejan el aprecio de Beaux por las pinturas de Édouard Manet y Edgar Degas. Moviéndose al ritmo de su bebé a través de una amplia extensión de suelo pulido, Ernesta es un descendiente espiritual de los hijos reales de Diego Velázquez, simultáneamente digno y vulnerable. La mano de Mattie sirve como símbolo universal de protección y seguridad, y la gran extensión de su delantal establece la escala para la figura diminuta del niño.
