1888 zog Filiger nach Pont-Aven, wo er Gauguin und seine Freunde in der Pension Gloanec traf. Er verließ einen naturalistischen Stil für die Prinzipien des Synthetismus und, wie ein Illustrator der populären Bilder, begann, kleine Szenen in Gouache zu schaffen, die er "kleine Beleuchtung" nannte und die allgemein als Notationschromatiques (Colour Notations) bekannt sind. Sie repräsentieren rund ein Drittel seiner Werke und zeigen Landschaften oder religiöse Szenen in Le Pouldu. Der Einfluss des Japonismus zeigt sich in dieser Breton-Landschaft, insbesondere im schrägen Baum.
