Anche se più di uno specialista nella produzione di piccoli pezzi di mobili e oggetti, fu il falegname, Diehl, che produsse questo imponente medaglieria, creato per l'Esposizione Universale del 1867. Il disegno della sua forma, intarsi e bronzi sono stati affidati a Brandely, e la scultura a Frémiet, mentre Diehl ha messo tutta la sua abilità nelle impiallacciature di cedro e noce, e la decorazione intarsiata. Attraendo molta attenzione durante l'Esposizione, gli osservatori hanno trovato difficile individuare lo stile di questo cabinet medaglia. .
