Il soggetto di questo dipinto è un consiglio di guerra nel campo realista il giorno prima della prima battaglia della guerra civile inglese. Re Carlo Sono accompagnato dai suoi comandanti il principe Rupert (seduto) e il conte di Lindsey, indicando la mappa. I suoi figli, i futuri re Carlo II e Giacomo II, giocano con un cane. Prefigurando la sua ultima sconfitta, il Re ha permesso alla sua concentrazione di vagare e sta fissando la bella cameriera che serve un piatto di pancetta. Il più famoso fratello minore di Landseer Edwin dipinse originariamente i cani. Questi furono poi tagliati e venduti separatamente, mentre il dipinto principale fu riparato da un artista sconosciuto.
