Fundada como escuela teológica en 1866, Howard fue contratado como universidad un año después. La facultad ha incluido líderes importantes, como Alain Locke, Dorothy Porter, Franklin Frazier, Dr. W. Montague Cobb, y Ernest Everett Just, entre muchos otros. “Old Main” fue derribado en 1940 para dar paso a la actual biblioteca principal.
