Der in Philadelphia geborene Thomas Willing (1731–1821) hat mit dem britischen Robert Morris (1734–1806) zusammengearbeitet, um 1757 die mercantile Firma Willing, Morris und Company zu etablieren. Es wurde zu einem der erfolgreichsten in Philadelphia, Export von Mehl, Tabak und Holz nach Europa, sowie Import von Zucker, Rum, Melasse und – am meisten abrupt – versklavten Arbeiter aus den Westindien und Afrika. Hier. Peale zeigt den Kaufmann, umrahmt von einem Blick auf den Atlantik, die Quelle seines Reichtums und Status. Willing hält ein Emblem seines transatlantischen Handels und Patriotismus. Gefertigt aus importiertem Silber und Tortoiseshell, hielt die Box ein Profil seines engen Freundes George Washington, einen fein gepulverten Tabak, der einer der profitablen Exporte von Willing war.
