Thomas Willing (1731–1821), nato a Filadelfia, ha collaborato con Robert Morris (1734–1806) per fondare la ditta mercantile Willing, Morris e Company nel 1757. Divenne uno dei più riusciti a Filadelfia, esportando farina, tabacco e legname in Europa, oltre a importare zucchero, rum, melassa e, per la maggior parte, lavoratori schiavi delle Indie Occidentali e dell'Africa. Ecco, Peale raffigurato il mercante incorniciato da una vista dell'Oceano Atlantico, la fonte della sua ricchezza e status. Willing detiene un emblema del suo commercio transatlantico e patriottismo. Realizzata in argento importato e tartaruga, la scatola – con un profilo del suo amico George Washington – ha tenuto snuff, un tabacco finemente in polvere che era una delle esportazioni redditizie di Willing.
