Margaret Strachan (1747-1821) fue la hija de William Strachan de Londres en el condado de Anne Arundel, Maryland. En 1772 se casó con Thomas Harwood, que sirvió como tesorero del Shore Occidental de Maryland desde 1776 hasta su muerte en 1804. Aunque sin fecha, este trabajo fue ejecutado probablemente antes del matrimonio de los Strachans. Se presenta en una lista de “de pago” compilada por Peale para el período 1770 a 1775. Un retrato compañero de Thomas Harwood fue pintado alrededor de 1775 y ahora está en la colección del Museo de Winterthur en Delaware.
