Margaret Strachan (1747-1821) est la fille de William Strachan, de Londres, dans le comté d'Anne Arundel, au Maryland. En 1772, elle épousa Thomas Harwood, qui fut trésorier de la rive ouest du Maryland de 1776 à sa mort en 1804. Bien que non daté, ce travail a probablement été exécuté avant le mariage Strachans. Il apparaît sur une liste de paiements dus par Peale pour la période de 1770 à 1775. Un portrait compagnon de Thomas Harwood a été peint vers 1775 et est maintenant dans la collection du Winterthur Museum au Delaware.
