Margaret Strachan (1747-1821) è stata la figlia di William Strachan di Londra Town nella contea di Anne Arundel, nel Maryland. Nel 1772 sposò Thomas Harwood, che servì come tesoriere della Shore occidentale del Maryland dal 1776 fino alla sua morte nel 1804. Anche se non datato, questo lavoro è stato probabilmente eseguito prima del matrimonio di Strachans. Appare su un elenco “pagamento dovuto” compilato da Peale per il periodo 1770-1775. Un ritratto compagno di Thomas Harwood è stato dipinto intorno al 1775 ed è ora nella raccolta del Museo Winterthur a Delaware.
