Il marchese de Grollier era un pittore amatoriale di grande successo, un termine che nella Francia settecentesca implicò una classe sociale elevata piuttosto che una mancanza di serietà o abilità. A differenza del più celebre pittore di vita, Anne Vallayer-Coster, Grollier non esibiva o vendeva la sua arte; tuttavia, era al centro di una ricca rete artistica, contando tra i suoi amici Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Hubert Robert, e lo scultore Antonio Canova, che la chiamava "Raphael of flower painting". Nell'ambito della sua formazione, Grollier ha copiato meticolosamente opere del suo insegnante, il pittore emigré olandese Gérard van Spaendonck, tra cui questo dipinto, che ha firmato "Marquise de Grollier, studente di Van Spaendonck".
