Die marquise de Grollier war ein sehr gelungener Amateurmaler, ein Begriff, dass Frankreich im achtzehnten Jahrhundert eine erhöhte soziale Klasse anstatt ein Mangel an Ernsthaftigkeit oder Geschick implizierte. Anders als der berühmteste Stilllebensmaler der Zeit, stellte Anne Vallayer-Coster, Grollier ihre Kunst nicht aus oder verkaufte; sie war jedoch im Zentrum eines reichen künstlerischen Netzwerks, das unter ihren Freunden Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Hubert Robert und dem Bildhauer Antonio Canova zählte, der sie als "Raphael of Flower Painting" bezeichnete. Als Teil ihrer Ausbildung kopierte Grollier sorgfältig Werke von ihrem Lehrer, der modische niederländische émigré Maler Gérard van Spaendonck, einschließlich dieses Gemälde, das sie unterschrieben "Marquise de Grollier, Studentin von Van Spaendonck."
