La marquesa de Grollier fue un pintor amateur altamente logrado, un término que en el siglo XVIII Francia implicó una clase social elevada en lugar de una falta de seriedad o habilidad. A diferencia del pintor más famoso de la vida, Anne Vallayer-Coster, Grollier no exhibió ni vendió su arte; sin embargo, estaba en el centro de una rica red artística, contando entre sus amigos Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Hubert Robert, y el escultor Antonio Canova, quien la llamó el "Raphael de la pintura de flores". Como parte de su formación, Grollier meticulosamente copió obras de su maestro, el pintor emigrado holandés Gérard van Spaendonck, incluyendo esta pintura, que firmó "Marquise de Grollier, estudiante de Van Spaendonck".
