Købke parece involuntariamente haber capturado esa calidad que los daneses les gusta enfatizar sobre la patria – relaciones informales entre lo alto y lo bajo, y en este caso la atmósfera sombría en las fortificaciones que se suponía que protegían a Copenhague contra enemigos desde fuera. Técnicamente, Købke combatió con esta pintura, pero lleva la feliz impresión de los “tiempos más ligeros” a los que alude en una carta a su hermana. Como alumno de Eckersberg tiene el control completo de la perspectiva de la pintura, y es evidente lo que era un colorista emocionante Købke.
