Købke sembra inconsapevolmente aver catturato quella qualità che i danesi amano sottolineare sulla patria – relazioni informali tra alto e basso, e in questo caso l'atmosfera dolorosa alle fortificazioni che dovevano proteggere Copenhagen dai nemici dall'esterno. Tecnicamente, Købke ha combattuto con questo dipinto, ma porta la felice impronta dei “momenti più leggeri” a cui allude in una lettera a sua sorella. Come allievo di Eckersberg ha il controllo completo della prospettiva del dipinto, ed è evidente quanto fosse un eccitante colorista Købke.
