Nel corso degli anni 1620, Déruet fu il pittore principale del ducato di Lorena, un importante centro artistico dell'attuale Francia orientale. Inizialmente addestrato da Jacques Bellange, un altro pittore di corte lorenese, Déruet fece un viaggio a Roma nel 1610, che fu fondamentale per esponerlo alle opere del pittore e incisore Antonio Tempesta. Come un certo numero di artisti nord-europei della sua generazione, Déruet seguì il comando di Tempesta creando composizioni complesse di caccia e di soggetti di battaglia di ispirazione classica come questi.
