Durante los años 1620, Déruet fue el principal pintor del ducado de Lorena, un importante centro artístico en la actual Francia oriental. Entrenado inicialmente por Jacques Bellange, otro pintor de la corte Lorena, Déruet realizó un viaje a Roma en los años 1610, que fue fundamental para exponerlo a obras del pintor y grabador Antonio Tempesta. Como varios artistas del norte de Europa de su generación, Déruet siguió el liderazgo de Tempesta creando complejas composiciones de temas de caza y batalla de inspiración clásica como estos.
