Während der 1620er Jahre war Déruet der Hauptmaler des Herzogtums von Lorraine, ein wichtiges künstlerisches Zentrum im heutigen Ostfrankreich. Zunächst von Jacques Bellange, einem anderen Lorraine-Gerichtsmaler, ausgebildet, nahm Déruet in den 1610er Jahren eine Reise nach Rom, die ihn zu Werken des Malers und Graveurs Antonio Tempesta entlarvte. Wie eine Reihe nordeuropäischer Künstler seiner Generation folgte Déruet Tempestas führender Künstler, die komplexe Kompositionen von klassisch inspirierten Jagd- und Schlachtthemen wie diese hervorbrachten.
