Il paesaggio poetico di Claude è stato ispirato dalla campagna intorno a Roma, nota come Campagna. Anche se i toni del primo piano e del centro di questo dipinto hanno oscurato, l’orizzonte conserva la famosa luminosità di Claude. In un taccuino eseguito opere, noto come il suo Liber Veritatis, Claude ha registrato che questo dipinto è stato eseguito a Roma per un cliente non chiamato a Lione, in Francia. Apparteneva poi a Sir Joshua Reynolds, capo della Royal Academy di Londra e avvocato di questo tipo di visione arcadica, raffigurante un mondo utopistico basato sulla poesia antica.
