Claudes poetische Landschaft wurde von der Landschaft um Rom inspiriert, die als Campagna bekannt ist. Obwohl die Vordergrund- und Mittentöne dieser Malerei verdunkelt sind, bewahrt der Horizont Claudes berühmte Leuchtkraft. In einer Notizbuchaufnahme ausgeführte Werke, bekannt als seine Liber Veritatis, Claude aufgezeichnet, dass dieses Gemälde in Rom für einen unbenannten Kunden in Lyons, Frankreich ausgeführt wurde. Später gehörte es Sir Joshua Reynolds, Leiter der Londoner Royal Academy und ein Befürworter für diese Art von Arcadian Vision, die eine utopische Welt auf der Grundlage der antiken Poesie darstellte.
