Wilson visitò il lago Nemi, circa venti miglia a sud-est di Roma nelle colline Alban, nel 1754. Questo dipinto risale probabilmente al 1756 o al 1757, poco prima o dopo il suo ritorno a Londra. La vista, che coniuga precisione topografica e idealizzazione pittoresca, è bagnata in una luce morbida e dorata che segue il precedente di artisti attivi a Roma nel XVII secolo, soprattutto Claude Lorrain.
