Edgar Allen Poe pubblicò il suo poema The Raven nel 1845, e anche se non portò molto denaro allo scrittore, lo portò molta fama. La poesia divenne molto popolare, e presto divenne ripubblicata, stampata, illustrata e parodiata tutta la cultura. Le illustrazioni di Gustave Dore delle poesie sono un esempio della risposta alla poesia. Le illustrazioni di Dore al poema apparvero in una pubblicazione indipendente nel 1884, quasi quarant’anni dopo la pubblicazione dell’originale. Purtroppo, Dore non è mai stato in grado di vedere queste illustrazioni in stampa, come è morto prima che fosse pubblicato. Resta una delle poesie più famose mai scritte.
