Delacroix, nel suo primo tentativo di entrare nel Salon di Parigi del 1922, lavorò senza sosta per due mesi e mezzo su questo, il Barque di Dante, il suo primo ingresso nella sede dell'arte. Dopo essere stato completato, Delacroix è stato impoverito e debole, e bisogno di recupero. La ricezione critica è stata variata, dai rapporti che era drab, alla sensazione che l'artista aveva speranza, a che era già un colorista distinto. Quella stessa estate, lo stato di Francia ha acquistato il dipinto per 2.000 franchi, ed è stato spostato al Museo di Lussemburgo. Sette anni dopo la morte dell'artista, è stato spostato al Louvre, dove ora risiede.
