Nella tavolozza muta dell'alba emergente, Claude Monet ritrasse il porto industriale di Le Havre sulla costa settentrionale della Francia. L'arancione brillante del sole che sorge tra l'aria umida e le danze sull'acqua dolce che ricopre, accendendo i suoi blu iridescenti e verdi. Appena discernibile attraverso un fresco haze, imballare le barche sul fumo di billow sinistro dalle loro pile. Dipinto durante la primavera del 1873, mentre il paese ha lottato per ricostruire dopo la guerra franco-prussiana, questo Sunrise potrebbe anche metaforicamente suggerire un nuovo giorno che sorge in Francia.
