Prima di diventare pittore, il Troost di Amsterdam lavorò come attore per diversi anni. Dipinse molte scene da opere farse, tra cui l’immensamente popolare “Jan Claasz o la Supposed Servant Girl”. Il Mauritshuis possiede tre pastelli raffiguranti scene di questo lavoro. Qui vediamo Jan Jasperzen (a sinistra, con una parrucca grigia) e sua moglie Dieuwertje ricevendo una visita da due gentiluomini la cui apparizione è decisamente vecchia. Gli uomini hanno chiesto a nome di Reinier Adriaansz di chiedere la mano in matrimonio della figlia di Jan e Dieuwertje, Saartje Jans. Saartje sta ascoltando segretamente – ha piani molto diversi.
