Nei Paesi Bassi sempre più urbanizzati, i paesaggi che raffigurano gli aspetti unici della campagna olandese sono stati particolarmente ricercati nel XIX secolo. Qui i contadini attraversano una terra incolta che sostiene solo una bassa crescita con alcuni alberi sparsi. La scena di sentieri solitari illuminati dai raggi del sole inondante è calcolata per evocare la solitudine pensierosa. Allenato all'Accademia dell'Aia, Cornelis Westerbeek trascorse il resto della sua carriera in città. Ha avuto molto successo in mostre nei Paesi Bassi negli anni 1880 e 90. Westerbeek è stato molto lodato per i suoi paesaggi che raffigurano i quartieri caldi dell'Olanda, soprattutto i suoi tramonti come qui.
