Artista di incomparabile fantasia e potere espressivo, Tura era pittore di corte ai duchi di Ferrara. Questa scena raffigura una santa famiglia stanca in fuga in Egitto dopo aver ricevuto un avvertimento che il re Erode stava cercando di uccidere il Gesù Bambino. Questa giostra appartiene ad una serie di tre che mostrano la prima vita di Cristo. La serie può venire dalla base (predella) di una pala d'altare, forse l'imponente Roverella Altarpiece di Tura, il cui pannello centrale è nella National Gallery di Londra. La linea nervosa, calligrafica e il paesaggio mistico sono tipici dell'artista.
