Leon Bakst e Alexandre Benois non erano solo artisti contemporanei, erano i due più importanti scenografi del loro tempo. Insieme, il loro lavoro ha rivoluzionato l'industria del design scenico, la creazione di opere mobili d'arte come costumi, e la pittura capolavori tele come fondali. Alla fine del 1890 Bakst era un membro leader del Mir Iskusstva, o World of Art Group, di cui Benois era anche un membro prominente. Facendo riferimento all'uso della leggera e ariosa sensazione di pittura gouache piuttosto che opere su larga scala, Bakst e altri membri del gruppo spesso progettato piccoli interni e libri, come un modo per portare l'arte ad ogni angolo della casa.
