Leon Bakst und Alexandre Benois waren nicht nur zeitgenössische Künstler, sie waren die zwei führenden Bühnen- und Bühnenbildner ihrer Zeit. Gemeinsam revolutionierte ihre Arbeit die Bühnen-Design-Industrie, indem sie bewegliche Kunstwerke als Kostüme kreierte und Meisterwerksleinwände als Backdrops malte. In den späten 1890er Jahren war Bakst ein führendes Mitglied der Mir Iskusstva oder World of Art Group, von denen Benois auch ein prominentes Mitglied war. Vorziehen, das leichte und luftige Gefühl der Gouache-Malerei anstelle von Full-Scale-Werken zu verwenden, Bakst und andere Mitglieder der Gruppe oft entworfen kleine Innen-und Bücher, als eine Möglichkeit, Kunst zu jeder Ecke des Hauses zu bringen.
