Leon Bakst et Alexandre Benois n'étaient pas seulement des artistes contemporains, ils étaient les deux premiers décors et décorateurs de scène de leur époque. Ensemble, leur travail a révolutionné l'industrie du design d'étape, créant des œuvres d'art mobiles comme costumes, et peint des toiles de chef-d'œuvre comme toile de fond. À la fin de 1890, Bakst était un membre de premier plan du Mir Iskusstva, ou World of Art Group, dont Benois était également un membre de premier plan. Preferring to use the light and airy feeling of gouache painting rather than full-scale works, Bakst and other members of the group often designed small interiors and books, as a way to bring art to every corner of the house.
