Un angelo annuncia a Maria che partorirà il figlio di Cristo. Sembra che si stia rinfrescando come se disturbata dal sonno. Questa è una reinterpretazione radicale del soggetto. Dante Gabriel Rossetti rifiutò la tradizione di rappresentare la Vergine ricevendo passivamente la notizia. Invece voleva che la foto avesse un realismo soprannaturale. Il bianco è il colore dominante qui, comunicando l'idea di purezza femminile. Questo è rinforzato dal ricamo del giglio - lo stesso che la Vergine è mostrata facendo in Rossetti
