Un ángel anuncia a María que dará a luz al hijo de Cristo. Parece que se está recuperando como si estuviera perturbada del sueño. Esta es una reinterpretación radical del tema. Dante Gabriel Rossetti rechazó la tradición de representar a la Virgen recibiendo pasivamente las noticias. En su lugar quería que la imagen tuviera un realismo sobrenatural. El blanco es el color dominante aquí, comunicando la idea de la pureza femenina. Esto es reforzado por el bordado de lirio - el mismo que la Virgen se muestra haciendo en Rossetti
