Secondo la leggenda medievale, Sant'Antonio Abate visse come eremita e resistette alle orribili apparizioni demoniache che lo affliggevano. Questo soggetto preferito ha permesso a Teniers di dipingere creature immaginarie per trasmettere la natura terrificante dell'esperienza del santo. Una domestica cornuta interrompe la preghiera di Sant’Antonio per puntare ad una signora elegantemente vestita che entra nella scena da sinistra portando un bicchiere. La scena è frequentata da mostri di diverse dimensioni e tipi, da un pesce volante in alto a sinistra a una creatura ibrida che fa rumore con uno shawn. Anche se bella a prima vista, i piedi della signora hanno taloni che rivelano la sua vera natura.
