Le goût des supports en cuivre chez les collectionneurs est passé d'Italie à l'Europe du Nord – notamment Anvers, où cette œuvre a probablement été peinte – au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Teniers était un peintre prolifique étroitement impliqué dans la cour flamande. Cette peinture a été acquise par un collectionneur américain pendant la Révolution française et donnée à The Met peu après la fondation du musée. Le sujet biblique représente l'héroïne juive Judith, qui a sauvé la ville de Béthulie en séduisant d'abord puis en décapitant le général assyrien Holofernes. Judith apparaît accompagnée de sa bonne et montre Holofernes coupé la tête comme un trophée.
