I pittori fiamminghi avevano una lunga tradizione di relegare narrazioni religiose sullo sfondo di scene tratte dalla vita contemporanea. Qui, lo spettatore può semplicemente scorgere la liberazione di San Pietro dalla prigionia da un angelo, mentre in primo piano, i soldati giocano a dadi e un mucchio di armature e terracotta trasporta l'abilitàllusionismo di Teniers. In questo modo, il dipinto emana le distrazioni mondane che possono causare ai credenti di perdere di vista le cose più alte. Questo dipinto è stato sequestrato dai nazisti dal barone Karl Neuman (Charles Neuman de Végvár) a Parigi e ricostituito a lui entro il 1947.
