In una fredda serata autunnale nell'A.D. 816, il poeta Bai Juyi stava vedendo un amico fuori in una fermata di traghetto quando ha sentito il suono di un liuto che passa attraverso l'acqua. Dopo la musica, arrivò in una barca dove un cortese anziano sedeva emettendo la sua canzone ricorrente attraverso il fiume oscurante. Spostato dalla malinconica dignità della scena, Bai scrisse “Song of the Lute” in onore del cortese. In questa rappresentazione della famosa poesia, l'unica indicazione della notte è la candela tra Bai e il suo amico mentre siedono nella loro barca, trasfissi dalla bellezza della canzone.
