Un soir d'automne froid en 816, le poète Bai Juyi aperçoit un ami à un arrêt de ferry lorsqu'il entendit le bruit d'un luth qui dérive à travers l'eau. Après la musique, il est venu à un bateau où une courtisane vieillissante s'est assise pour publier sa chanson limpide à travers la rivière obscurcie. Poussé par la dignité mélancolique de la scène, Bai a écrit : « Chant du Lute » en l'honneur de la courtisane. Dans ce rendu du célèbre poème, la seule indication de la nuit est la bougie entre Bai et son ami alors qu'ils s'asseyaient dans leur bateau, transfixée par la beauté de la chanson.
