En una fría noche de otoño en la A.D. 816, el poeta Bai Juyi estaba viendo a un amigo en una parada de ferry cuando escuchó el sonido de un lute que pasaba por el agua. Siguiendo la música, llegó a un barco donde un joven cortesano se sentó emitiendo su canción llana a través del río oscurecer. Movido por la dignidad melancolía de la escena, Bai escribió “Canción del Luto” en honor de la cortesana. En esta interpretación del famoso poema, la única indicación de la noche es la vela entre Bai y su amigo mientras se sientan en su barco, transfijo por la belleza de la canción.
