Il punto di osservazione audace, posto in mezzo alla barca, favorisce un senso di intimità con gli uomini che lavorano pausing dai loro lavori. La loro attenzione rivolta verso la conversazione altrui e i gesti misurati li conferiscono una dignità che trascende il loro aspetto gonfio. Baixeras si alleò all'Accademia di Belle Arti nel suo nativo Barcellona e fece il suo debutto internazionale con questo dipinto, che fu esposto al Salone di Parigi del 1886. È stato acquistato lì dal banchiere di New York, magnate della ferrovia e collezionista d'arte George I. Seney, un primo sostenitore del Met.
