Nella prima metà del XX secolo questo dipinto fu considerato un'opera autografa di Van Baburen. L'originale, datato 1622 e ora a Boston, fu riscoperto solo nel 1949 e pubblicato per la prima volta da Gowing nel 1951.5 Mentre la qualità piuttosto aspra del Rijksmuseum governa l'autorevolezza di Van Baburen, il craquelure rivela che è stato eseguito nel XVII o all'inizio del XVIII secolo.
