Esta pintura representa María Magdalena, símbolo del poder del arrepentimiento. Una prostituta reformada, la Magdalena lavó y ungió los pies de Cristo, lo que le llevó a perdonar sus pecados. Su largo cabello y ungüento tarro referencia este servicio a Cristo, mientras que el cráneo y la hiedra simbolizan la muerte, resurrección e inmortalidad. La recompensa celestial por su fe ardiente es sugerida por la luz que rompe la cabeza. El Greco a menudo pintó la Magdalena y las imágenes devocionales de otros santos penitentes.
