Questo dipinto raffigura Maria Maddalena, simbolo del potere del pentimento. Una prostituta riformata, la Maddalena lavò e unse i piedi di Cristo, portandolo a perdonare i suoi peccati. I suoi lunghi capelli e unguento fanno riferimento a questo servizio a Cristo, mentre il teschio e l'edera simboleggiano morte, resurrezione e immortalità. La ricompensa celeste per la sua fede ardente è suggerita dalla luce che infrange la testa. El Greco dipinse spesso la Maddalena e le immagini devozionali di altri santi penitenti. Qui vediamo esempi del suo stile tipico: spazzolatura espressiva, illuminazione inquietante e forme allungate.
