Né à Pérouse, Vincenzo Anastagi (vers 1531-1586) a rejoint les Chevaliers de Malte en 1563 et a été un leader dans la défense héroïque de cette île pendant le siège turc massif de 1565. Après avoir occupé plusieurs autres postes de responsabilité, il a été nommé sergent-major de Castel Sant-Angelo à Rome. Anastagi était apparemment un expert en fortifications. Ce portrait, déjà particulièrement intense et animé, date probablement d'El Grecos les dernières années en Italie.
