Nato a Perugia, Vincenzo Anastagi (ca. 1531–86) si unì ai Cavalieri di Malta nel 1563 e fu leader nella eroica difesa di quell'isola durante l'imponente assedio turco del 1565. Dopo aver ricoperto vari altri incarichi, è stato nominato sergente maggiore di Castel Sant’Angelo a Roma. Anastagi apparentemente era un esperto di fortificazioni. Questo ritratto, già caratteristicamente intenso e animato di stile, risale probabilmente agli ultimi anni di El Greco in Italia.
