Vincenzo Anastagi (ca. 1531–86) wurde 1563 in Perugia geboren und war während der massiven türkischen Belagerung von 1565 führend in der heroischen Verteidigung dieser Insel. Nach verschiedenen anderen verantwortlichen Stellen wurde er Sergeant Major von Castel Sant’Angelo in Rom. Anastagi war offenbar ein Experte für Befestigungen. Dieses Porträt, bereits charakteristisch intensiv und im Stil geistig, stammt wahrscheinlich aus den letzten Jahren von El Greco in Italien.
