Originariamente questo putto, e altre cinque figure di bambini, sormontò il tabernacolo che sorgeva dal fonte battesimale nel Battistero di Siena. Questi piccoli bronzi non solo hanno segnato l'ingresso del motivo putto nella storia dell'arte. Essi arruolò anche il nudo di libertà rinascimentale nel modo dell'antichità, e il motivo successivo della figura serpentinata, che così concisamente identifica il manierismo cinquecentesco. La postura del putto, un contrapposto classico con un giro a tutta lunghezza del corpo, è causata dalla necessità del putto di bilanciare sulla superficie stretta e a volta di una conchiglia mentre si fa musica.
