Nel 1872, Degas viaggiò con suo fratello Rene a New Orleans, in Louisiana, per visitare lo zio, Michel Musson. Dopo la sua partenza nel 1873 in Francia fu ritardato, decise di dipingere per passare il tempo, e voleva che questo dipinto fosse venduto ad un commerciante tessile britannico. Ma, un declino mondiale dei prezzi del cotone rendeva impossibile la vendita, e mostrava invece l'opera nell'Esposizione Impressionista di Parigi nel 1876. Nel 1878 fu acquistata dal Museo di Belle Arti, rendendola la prima vendita di una delle opere di Degas ad un museo.
