Conosciuto anche come The Rape, questo dipinto ha posto un conundrum per gli storici dell'arte fin dalla sua creazione. Durante il periodo in cui è stato dipinto, Degas era conosciuto per dipinti storici o quelli con un'influenza letteraria, ma nessuna tale influenza o storia storica può essere collegata Interior. L'accordo più ampio è che il dipinto si riferisce ad una scena nel romanzo Therese Raquin, di Emile Zola, pubblicato nel 1867. Si riferisce a come uno dei più drammatici e teatrali di tutte le composizioni di Degas, in quanto gli oggetti della stanza sono posizionati quasi come oggetti di scena e la rappresentazione dei personaggi ha avuto una qualità scenica, teatrale.
