Il pittore alla moda James Tissot fu amico e mentore di Degas negli anni 1860 e 1870. Posato in uno studio, cappello superiore e mantello satinato al suo fianco, Tissot è circondato da tele che riflettono i gusti più ampi che ha condiviso con Degas: un'immagine esotica in stile giapponese; scene di svago contemporaneo; e dietro il cavalletto, un soggetto veneziano cinquecentesco o seicentesco. Al centro, una copia dopo un ritratto di Federico il saggio del Louvre, precedentemente attribuito a Lucas Cranach il Vecchio, rende omaggio all'arte del Rinascimento settentrionale.
