El pintor de moda James Tissot fue amigo y mentor de Degas en los años 1860 y principios de 1870. Posed in a studio, top hat and satin-lined cape by his side, Tissot está rodeado de lienzos que reflejan los amplios gustos que compartió con Degas: una imagen exótica de estilo japonés; escenas de ocio contemporáneo; y detrás del caballete, un tema veneciano del siglo XVI o XVII. En el centro, una copia después de un retrato de Frederick el Wise en el Louvre, atribuido anteriormente a Lucas Cranach el Viejo, rinde homenaje al arte del Renacimiento del Norte.
